The modern agricultural industry in Changping specializes in one flower and three fruits as its main products: the lily, apple, strawberry and persimmon. The 7th International Strawberry Symposium was successfully held in Changping in Feb, 2012. The symposium is one of the top global agricultural academic meetings and is hailed as the Strawberry Olympics.

31.5% of those employed within the Hurunui district work in agriculture, forestry or fishing. The landscape of the district lends itself well to both dairy, sheep and free-farmed pig farming as well as to more unique opportunities with deer, alpaca and goats.

The many commercial Pinus Radiata plantations are harvested on a 30 yearly cycle and are a major inclusion of New Zealand's export industry. Whereas the Waipara Valley offers cool climate wine making abilities and is in fact one of the premium Pinot Noir and Riesling wine producing regions in New Zealand.

The region is supported by key agricultural universities and primary sector groups who are dedicated to the education and advancement of best practice sustainable farming.
